From June 2nd to 10th 2018, ‘Blue Container on the New Silk Road: Duisburg 2018’, the launch event of the Blue Container Project, will take place at RheinPark Duisburg, where I show new pictures of my series Averted Portraits from China. The opening ceremony will be attended by political VIPs, cultural figures, economic representatives and other special guests from the participating countries.
Around the globe, culture is moving away from local traditions, towards universality and homogeneity. The downside of instant messages, shorter travel times and broader perspectives is a loss of diversity. Is there a way to preserve cultural uniqueness, while also achieving freer communication and greater understanding between nations and individuals? And what effect does moving between cultures have on someone’s sense of self, of place? Between them, the 22 artists of ‘Interlocal’ have lived on five continents, speak more than ten languages, and have travelled and worked in dozens of countries. They have adapted, through choice or necessity, to cultures and conditions quite different to the ones they were born into. These multifaceted cultural identities, and the great global, national and
personal changes they have experienced, are reflected in their art.
